IMPLANTOLOGY

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implant procedure is a successful and reliable treatment which is applied when there is a missing tooth and in order not to lose the intraoral harmony.

A dental implant is a piece of titanium that resembles the missing tooth. It is placed in the jaw where the roots of the missing tooth are located. Over time, the bone grows around the implant and get ready to function.

Who can have this treatment?

The minimum age for implant is nearly 20 because the development of the jaw continues until that age. There is no maximum age limit, but the person’s systematic health and the amount and intensity of the bone can indicate whether this treatment can be applied.

Apart from age, diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatic diseases, medication use, and smoking are some of the important issues that should be considered thoroughly before starting implant applications. These diseases must be kept under control and if the doctor approves, implant treatment can be applied to the patient.

Planning

For planning the implant, radiological and intraoral examination are necessary. In the X-ray, the size of the bone is evaluated and in the intraoral examination, soft tissue and the distance between the jaws are assessed.

  • The systematic health of the patient
  • Tobacco use
  • Grinding or clenching of the teeth
  • The reasons for tooth loss
  • Oral hygiene is evaluated and then a decision given on implant application

Implant Application

Depending on the brand of the implant, the patient has to wait approximately 3 months for the upper jaw and 2 months for the lower jaw before the prosthesis stage begins.

Advanced surgical techniques

The best time for implant application is the first 6 months following the teeth extractions because after these extractions, the bone recovers within 6 months. After this period, osteoporosis starts because of malfunction. The longer the malfunction is, the more loss there is in the bone. As a result of these losses, anatomical neighboring may occur, and the bone gets thinner not allowing to insert the implants. In this case, before implant application, bone formation must happen. There are various techniques available for this.

  • Sinus lifting
  • Bone Splitting
  • Bone Grafting
  • Block bone graft application

The dentist determines the technique according to the needs of the patient. The patient must wait for 6-7 months for the application.

All-on-four technique

Due to the early losses of back teeth, serious bone loss occurs. By applying advanced surgery techniques, bone can grow, and implant application can be done. Or with all-on-four technique, implants are inserted in different angles to avoid advanced surgery techniques. The prostheses applied on top of the implant also vary. The prosthetic screw can be taken out by the dentist and inserted back after doing the necessary processes.
