APICAL RESECTION

APICAL RESECTION

Apical resection is the procedure for removal of the root tip of the tooth. Under what circumstances is apical resection applied?

  • for infections that do not heal with root canal treatment
  • resorption at the root end of the tooth
  • in cases when the root canal treatment cannot be performed due to inability to reach the root canal through the teeth
  • roots damaged because of traumas

Precise Treatment for Root Tip Removal and Recovery

It’s a more successful treatment in front teeth as the possibility of damaging the tissues such as vein and nerve is less and it is easier to reach from the jawbone. After determining the condition and the location of the root tip with 3D tomography, under local anesthesia, the bone over the root tip will be lifted a little and then the root tip will be cut and removed. After the root canal is cleaned, it is filled with bone grafts and closed.

After apical resection, full recovery is generally observed. In the 3rd month and 6th month, x-rays are taken, and new bone formation is observed around the root.
